How Do You Know When You're Ready for Your Driving Test?

A practical readiness checklist to go through with your instructor before booking or taking your test.
You're usually ready when you can drive safely and consistently without help from your instructor, in a range of conditions. Here's a checklist to go through together.
Readiness checklist
- I can drive a full lesson with little or no prompting.
- I handle junctions, roundabouts and dual carriageways confidently.
- I check mirrors and blind spots without being reminded.
- I can do all the reversing manoeuvres reliably.
- I know the show me, tell me questions.
- I can follow a sat nav or road signs for 20 minutes.
- I've driven in different weather and traffic conditions.
- I've done a mock test and passed it under test conditions.
Signs you may need more time
- Your instructor still regularly uses the dual controls or gives instructions to keep you safe.
- You pick up the same serious fault in mock tests.
- You feel unsure on certain types of road.
Should you book early?
Test waiting times can be long, so some learners book ahead. If you do, be honest with yourself as the date approaches. You can usually change your test date, but check the notice rules on GOV.UK.
Trust your instructor's view
A good instructor wants you to pass and will tell you honestly if you're not yet ready. If you're not sure, ask them what specifically you still need to work on.
