How to Prepare for Driving Test Day

What to do the week before, the night before and on the morning of your test, plus a checklist of what to bring.
Good preparation on the day won't replace skill, but it can help you drive at your normal standard.
The week before
- Confirm your test time and centre.
- Arrange a lesson just before the test with your instructor if possible.
- Drive around the area near your test centre.
The night before
- Get your licence ready.
- Plan your route and timings.
- Get a good night's sleep and avoid last-minute cramming.
What to bring
- UK photocard driving licence
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them
- Your instructor and their car, or a suitable car that meets the GOV.UK car rules
Official information: Check GOV.UK for the current list of what to take.
On the morning
- Eat something and drink water.
- Warm up with a drive before the test.
- Arrive a little early, but not so early you're waiting a long time.
Managing nerves
- Breathe slowly before you start.
- Remember that one minor mistake won't fail you.
- If you don't hear an instruction, ask the examiner to repeat it.
After the test
Whatever the result, the examiner will explain your faults. If you didn't pass, you can book again. Use the feedback to plan your next lessons.
