What to Expect in Your Theory Test

The car theory test has two parts, taken in the same sitting at a theory test centre. You need to pass both parts to pass the test.

Before the test

• Book your test through the official GOV.UK service.
• Bring your UK photocard driving licence (provisional). Without the right ID, you may not be able to sit the test.
• Arrive in good time. Late arrivals may not be allowed to take the test.

Part 1: multiple-choice questions

You answer 50 questions in 57 minutes, and need 43 out of 50 to pass. Some questions are based on a short video case study. You can flag questions and come back to them.

Questions cover topics such as alertness, attitude, safety margins, hazard awareness, vulnerable road users, road signs and the rules of the road.

Part 2: hazard perception

After a short break, you watch 14 video clips of everyday road scenes. You click when you see a developing hazard, something that would make you change speed or direction. There are 15 developing hazards to score (one clip has two). The pass mark is 44 out of 75.

Results

You get your result at the centre shortly after the test. If you pass, you'll receive a pass certificate number, which you need to book your practical test. A theory test pass is valid for 2 years.
