What Happens If You Fail Your Theory Test?
What a theory test fail means, how soon you can retake, and how to prepare better next time.
Failing the theory test is common and fixable. Here's what happens and how to approach your next attempt.
You need to pass both parts
The multiple-choice section and hazard perception are taken together. If you fail either part, you fail the whole test and need to retake both parts.
Your result
You'll be told your result and your score for each part at the centre. Use this to work out where to focus.
How soon can you retake?
Official rule: You must wait at least 3 working days before taking your theory test again. Check GOV.UK for the latest rules.
You'll need to book and pay for a new test.
Work out what went wrong
- Multiple choice low? Go back through The Highway Code by topic and take more timed mock tests.
- Hazard perception low? You may be clicking too late, too early or too often. Practise with official clips and focus on the first moment a hazard develops.
- Nerves? Practising under timed conditions can make the real thing feel more familiar.
Can you still have driving lessons?
Yes. You can take driving lessons with a provisional licence before passing your theory test. You just can't book your practical test until you've passed.
Lessons can even help with the theory, as you see hazards and signs in real life. Find a local instructor.
